2025 Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge - Challenge the Chief

I'm fundraising for... Wellspring Alberta. My personal inspiration was a real-life superhero, Max Schuster!

I am participating in Challenge the Chief taking place this June in support of Wellspring Alberta. I am excited to take on the challenge and look forward to pushing myself to climb in support of people living with cancer.

By donating to me, you are helping to make a difference in the lives of many! Proceeds from the event will support Wellspring Alberta, an organization that provides free programs, services and support to individuals living with cancer – those diagnosed, caregivers and kids. Thank you for helping us make a difference in the life of someone facing cancer so that no one has to face cancer alone! For more information about Wellspring Alberta, visit wellspringalberta.ca.

Wellspring Alberta will gift a portion of the proceeds to the Firefighters Assistance Charitable Society (FACS) whose mission is to empower and strengthen the firefighter by enhancing the success and resilience of the firefighter community.

Please support me and these deserving organizations today by making your tax-deductible donation online.

My personal inspiration was a real-life superhero, Max Schuster; www.livetothemax.ca. Please take a few minutes of your day to visit this website and learn from Max's story. "It will teach you that every day is worth fighting for, that smiles, and laughter can bloom in darkness, that hope is a powerful tool, that people will show up when you need them most and that our children are so much stronger than we think".

This Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge will be held in person at Calgary’s tallest tower, Brookfield Place. At 57 stories and 1,370 steps, this venue offers firefighters access to the stunning views when they complete their climb.

I have registered to take on Calgary Fire Chief Steve Dongworth in this thrilling toe to toe competition! Participants must raise a minimum of $5000.00 before showring up to race the Chief up 1370 steps to the top of Calgary's tallest tower: Brookfield Place. To make the race fair. I'll be fitted in firefighter gear. Proceeds support Wellspring Alberta and all people living with cancer.

Wellspring Alberta's Scott Patterson Signs up to Challenge the Chief

Monday 3rd Feb

https://wellspring.ca/alberta/blog/2025/01/29/wellsprings-scott-patterson-signs-up-to-challenge-the-chief/

Scott Patterson is many things to many people, but at Wellspring he is widely known as the warm, attentive, compassionate centre manager at Wellspring’s Carma House.

“As a caregiver member, I so look forward to seeing Scott at Carma House. His welcoming smile is ever-present. Scott has provided me with emotional support when needed on those bad days. Casual conversations to brighten your days are frequent and appreciated. Scott even assisted me with maps on how to get to Cross Cancer Institute and Wellspring in Edmonton when we needed to travel to Edmonton from Calgary for oncology and nuclear medicine treatments,” said Eleanor Broski.

This year, Scott has boldly stepped forward to show just how deeply committed he is to supporting those living with cancer, by signing up to Challenge the Chief at Wellspring’s Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge on June 8th.

“I like the idea of this event and all that it does to raise awareness and funds for Wellspring. I was eager to be next in line when there was talk about passing the torch from Rebecca Perkins (Wellspring’s outreach manager), who did this challenge with great success and impact last year,” said Scott.

While Scott says he is motivated by the health and fitness benefits of participating in the grueling 57-floor stairclimb, his greatest inspiration comes from daily conversations with Wellspring members who are courageously seeking strategies and connection as they journey through cancer; and from the legacy of one brave little boy he will never forget.

“My personal inspiration was a real-life superhero called Max Schuster. Friends of mine and my wife lost Max to acute myeloid leukemia when he was just five years old. His story is a testament to how strong children are. I encourage people to take a few minutes to read and learn from Max’s story,” he said.

This January, with adjustments to his diet and a rigorous training plan in the works, raising the $5,000 minimum to take on Calgary Fire Chief, Steve Dongworth, is top of mind for Scott.

“I’m accountable now, and I’m super keen!” he said, adding, “I’m doing cardio five days a week. This week I’m meeting with the Deputy Fire Chief to get training tips and the gear I’ll be wearing at the stairclimb – overalls, boots (etc.) – stuff I need to train with. I’ll start doing the stairs at the Calgary Tower in March, and some other stairs around Calgary as well,” he said.

Indeed, in the coming months Scott will need to be at the top of his game, drawing on support from others as he builds the strength and stamina to join hundreds of firefighters who will climb the 1,370 steps to the top of Brookfield Place to raise funds for Wellspring in June.

“Please help Scott in his endeavours to raise funds for Wellspring, the charity and people who mean so much to him,” said Eleanor.

1 Month into Training

Sunday 26th Jan
Well I'm ahead in more ways that one.
I'm one month into training and counting my blessings.
For me this started late summer in 2024.  I privately spoke with Rebecca Perkins Wellspring Alberta's Outreach Manager. She was Wellspring Alberta's Challenge the Chief last June for the Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge, which by the ways she crushed! I let her know that I was thinking of possibly taking up the challenge in 2025. I shared it was two fold. One,of course to raise funds and awareness for Wellspring Alberta so those living with cancer and their loved ones can continue to take over 75 programs and supports at no cost at time in their lives when there is so much out of their control. Two, selfishly that I recognized that I was well out of shape and I not only wanted but needed to be held accountable on my journey to be fit again. Bec of course with out pause was behind me 100% and supported this decision. I shared this decision with our staff, Volunteers and program leaders at our Annual Volunteer Holiday Celebration event that was held at Randy O'Dell house in mid December 2024.  The support that flooded in after this announcement was overwhelming. It filled my cup and I knew from that moment I was all in. Now I find myself here in the end of January and I'm well into preparing for the big day on Sunday June 8, 2025. I'm doing cardio 5x a week and feeling better than I have in a loooong time. I've made smart easy changes to my diet and it's been wonderful with going back to basics. Today a great friend Emma, encouraged me to join her at McHugh Bluff - The stairs that provide the gorgeous views of downtown Calgary from Crescent Heights down to  Princes Island Park. These stairs are equivalent to a 9 floors. I was beyond proud as I completed them 10x.  Mind you my legs a few hours later now feel like spaghetti.  I know it will only get harder as I'm required to wear the full set of firefighter gear on the day of. The real inspiration are the members I see daily at Wellspring and what they are going though. They come for themselves, for their loved ones and they are so positive, arriving with smiles and encouragement for everyone they see. I'm challenging all that read this to share a positive feedback with someone you love today.
