I am participating in Challenge the Chief taking place this June in support of Wellspring Alberta. I am excited to take on the challenge and look forward to pushing myself to climb in support of people living with cancer.

Nisha’s Biggest Stair Climb (yet)!

Wellspring’s motto that “No one has to go through cancer
alone.” is a very real and powerful statement to me. On May 19, 2022, I found
out I was critically anemic and at risk of heart failure. I spent the weekend
in emergency and a few days later I heard the unimaginable: “We’ve got your
test results back. It’s cancer.” I was 32 years old.
I knew no one, and I mean no one, that had cancer at that age. It was my first time hearing the words “atypical polypoid adenomyoma”, a rare polyp-type growth, and “endometrial cancer”, a cancer of the lining of the uterus that typically affects post-menopausal women in their 60s. My oncology team at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre wasn’t expecting me either. I had no risk factors and no history. Tests were run but my hormones weren’t to blame. Besides the cellular printer error, I was “otherwise young and healthy”. The cancer was the freak mutation, and yet I’ve never felt so broken.
I needed to find other survivors. My oncology team would save my life, but it was Wellspring that provided the community and connection that is so vital to living with and beyond cancer. I am especially grateful for the young adult programs for the 18-40 age group. There are so many physical, emotional and financial hardships to a cancer diagnosis. But even in treatment, the message was clear: I am more than cancer, and I am not alone.
Today, I am cancer-free. After three months of treatment, and over a year of recovery (and counting!), I am stepping into my own again. I can live independently, I can drive, I can go to the mountains. And I can finally give back.
