Jim Winslett, performing as "story." has been making music and telling stories most of his life. He started singing at an early age, played drums and trumpet growing up, and discovered handbells in 1993. After moving to Canada in 2014, he helped charter the Bow River Handbell Musicians Society, which has grown to include five performance teams and around fifty musicians. He also serves in leadership roles within the handbell community at the local, provincial, and national levels.
In 2014, Jim was diagnosed with Stage IV follicular lymphoma. A few years later, he was also diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer and was told he had only a 30% chance of survival. While preparing for what he thought might be the end of his life, he discovered Pete & Bas, two London rappers whose determination and sense of purpose inspired him to start fighting again. Against the odds, Jim beat those odds, met Pete & Bas in the UK, and eventually found himself on stage performing with them.
That experience led him to writing and performing rap music under the name "story." a name he chose because his songs are more like stories told through rhythm and rhyme. His debut single, Ring My Bell, brings together his love of storytelling and handbells while reflecting on cancer, survival, and the people who help us through difficult times.
Jim is donating proceeds from the project to cancer charities, with Wellspring Alberta chosen as the first beneficiary of the campaign.
