In February 2025, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with cancer. It all began in late 2024 when I started experiencing unusual symptoms. As a woman in my 40s, I initially brushed them off, thinking they were not a cause for concern. However, with the support of my family doctor, I was referred for an ultrasound in late January 2025. On that same day, I received a call from my family doctor delivering the life-altering news: there was a problem.
Despite being up to date on my tests and having no previous flags, I soon learned that my situation was more serious than anyone anticipated. Within two weeks, I underwent an MRI, consulted with a specialist, and was referred to Princess Margaret Hospital, where my diagnosis was confirmed – stage 3 cervical cancer.
Hearing the words "You have cancer" was terrifying. As a mother of two young children, the thought of what could happen to my family if I were no longer there weighed heavily on my heart. Yet, amidst the fear, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. The time from my initial testing to the start of my treatment was just five weeks—a remarkable turnaround made possible by a snowstorm that created last-minute cancellation opportunities and the exceptional care of the medical team at Princess Margaret Hospital. I was also fortunate to be in good health, and I’m also pretty stubborn.
During my treatment journey, I completed five weeks of 'Chemo-lite' and radiation therapy, followed by three rounds of brachytherapy. Throughout this challenging time, I was incredibly grateful for the unwavering support from my family, friends and colleagues. They made a significant difference by joining me for mid-day walks, visiting me in the hospital, providing meals, and helping care for my children as needed.
Just nine months after my diagnosis, I am pleased to share that my body has responded remarkably well to treatment, with no further cancer cells detected. I am actively working on rebuilding my strength and energy levels, and I eagerly anticipate the day when I can officially declare that I have been cured.
Throughout this journey, one of my greatest challenges has been learning to prioritize myself. Slowing down and allowing myself to rest felt difficult, and I often battled feelings of guilt for taking time for my own well-being. Wellspring is essential in supporting individuals living with cancer by helping them prioritize self-care and alleviating the guilt many experience. Through programs that assist with symptom management, promote cancer-specific exercise, and offer support for families, Wellspring fosters a nurturing environment for those affected by cancer. This is why raising funds to support their mission is so important.
I share my story not only to raise awareness about cancer but also to inspire others facing similar challenges and to raise awareness and support for places like Wellspring that make the journey so much easier. Your support can make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
On March 25, 2026, I will be walking the runway at Well Dressed for Spring in support of Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation at The Quay.
